Utvalt i Syd

Project

Utvalt i Syd (Selected in the South) is a project and a recurring juried touring exhibition complemented by seminars and workshops focusing on crafts.

Utvalt aims to encourage works that are based on the crafts tradition but that preferably go beyond the traditional boundaries of expression and technique. Utvalt encourages collaborations in which practitioners with differing cultural and artistic approaches to crafts and tradition can create added values. Utvalt i Syd is organised by Form/Design Center, The Handicraft Association of Scania and The Crafts Center (KVHC).

Utvalt is a close and far-reaching collaboration between these three organizations and aims to stimulate development in the area, increase knowledge, awareness and strengthen the interest in crafts and form. Current round has been preceded by Utvalt i Skåne (Selected in Skåne) and opens up for the applicant with connection to all the southern counties: Skåne, Blekinge, Halland, Kronoberg, Kalmar and Jönköping counties.

Everyone who works with craftsmanship and artistic creation in their own name or together with others had the opportunity to apply. However, the application requires its own connection to one of the southern counties. An experienced jury selects the contributions to be represented in the exhibition. Utvalt i Syd 2021

The third traveling exhibition in the project shows 27 works by 27 practitioners. These works have been selected by the Utvalt's merited jury.

Free admission, with the exception of Bodafors where admission is valid for more exhibitions.

Scholarships

Two scholarships of SEK 30,000 each from the Malmö Industrial Association and the Skåne Handicraft Association are tied to Utvalt I Syd 2021. The scholarships are awarded to practitioners whose work is particularly distinguished in accordance within the scholarship framework.

The Malmö Industrial Association's scholarship is awarded to Caroline Möller for the work Sudden eruption. It is a work that testifies to the exploration of the ceramic material, firing technique and glaze - which in concurrence with great technical skill and an artistic eye have resulted in works with a unique and imaginative expression.

The Skåne Handicraft Association's scholarship is awarded to Lena Palenius for Sagokudden, where she personally follows and renews a long Skåne tradition of narrative embroidery. We recognize the composition inspired by older jynn where motifs abound within the strict corners of the form. The stitches move freely and fluently in a renewed color scale and with painterly needlework. Sagokudden is a continuation of a traditional story with the individual language of the author, and of our time.

The jury 2021

The jury for 2021 has all great experience in the areas of arts and crafts, handicraft and design and they have all in different ways and from different perspectives been interested in questions about the work of the hand regarding quality, development and context. Read more here (in Swedish) >>
