Background
The architecture industry is facing several major changes, where the transition from new construction and demolition to utilization of existing resources is central. In order to refine and renew existing places or buildings, a special ability is required, for which both new skills, new norms and new role models are needed.
At the same time, the industry is in the middle of an extensive recession that is affecting more and more people. Particularly hard hit are the recently graduated architects. A group with a great opportunity to work with a new perspective for an industry in transition.
With this backdrop, an initiative will be launched in the spring of 2024 that aims to increase knowledge in this field. The initiative, which consists of a series of efforts and competitions, takes its point of departure from the Swedish Architects' publication Agera (Act) which focuses on how we handle architectural and spatial issues surrounding the development and management of existing environments.
The competition
First up will be the 72h competition Mellan-rummet, a temporary spatial installation at Hedmanska gården in Malmö. A historically unique place that has had a range of different functions, appearances and areas of use since the 15th century. An example of how a built environment can be robust over time and withstand different economic and political conditions which, as a result, involve changing architectural ideals.
The call asks for an architectural idea that both highlights the site's qualities and historical layers and contributes to the discussion of what a contemporary public place can be. The design is assessed mainly based on its architectural quality and as an aesthetic addition to the courtyard, but suggestions for creative ideas about how the installation can be used are also included in the assessment. Other important assessment aspects are circularity and resilience in material selection and that the proposal is feasible within the set production time. The construction also needs to be able to be dismantled for moving and storage as the structure will be stored for the winter.
Participation
Mellan-rummet is aimed at all newly graduated and newly established architects in building, interior, planning and landscape architecture with a maximum of 4 years of experience since obtaining a master's degree. The majority of the team must have a master's degree in architecture (the team leader must be one of these). However, no one in the team may have more than 4 years of work experience.
The team behind the winning proposal receives compensation of SEK 100,000 excluding VAT for carrying out the assignment. The winning proposal will be announced on May 2, 2024. In addition to the proposal, the team also needs to be on site in Malmö for 1–2 days for a working meeting with the craftsmen who will build the proposal in May. There is a separate budget for material and implementation costs of SEK 200,000. The installation will be inaugurated on June 5 and will be in place for the rest of the summer and will then be rebuilt in 2025.

The competition starts on April 22 at 9.00 a.m and ends on April 25 at 9.00 am. Complete competition information and documents are emailed to all registered when the competition starts (in Swedish).

All submitted proposals are assessed by a jury group consisting of:

The initiative is organized by Form/Design Center, Sveriges Arkitekter and Sveriges Arkitekter Skåne, with the support of SLU Tankesmedjan Movium and The City of Malmö.
FAQ
I am a student or have a degree other than an architecture degree, can I participate?
The competition is primarily aimed at architects with a completed master's degree at the time of application. The majority of the team must have a master's degree (the team leader must be one of these). Thereafter, students and newly established professionals in other fields can participate. Everyone in the team must not have more than 4 years of work experience in the respective field.
I have a foreign degree and/or live in another country (than Sweden), can I participate?
Yes, you are welcome to participate.
Can I be in more than one team?
No, as it is a short announcement period, you can only be in one team at a time.
Will there be an economic compensation?
The compensation is a total of SEK 100,000 excluding VAT for everyone in the team.
Will the winning team build the structure themselves?
No, the structure is built by professional craftsmen and constructors. But for your idea to be managed and understood, the team will need to attend an introduction and work meeting on site in Malmö the first week of May.
Is there a budget for implementation and materials?
Material costs and implementation costs are not included in the economic compensation and have a separate budget of SEK 200,000 excluding VAT. It includes costs for materials, constructor, shipping, craftsmen and implementation, etc. More detailed information can be found in the call for proposals.
Is there a limit to how many people can be in each team?
You can be as many as you want in the team as long as the majority of the team has an architectural degree. Everyone in the team must not have more than 4 years of work experience in the respective field.
How will I receive the compensation?
The team is not based in Sweden you will have send an invoice. The fee is SEK 100,000 excluding VAT.
Do I need to register all team members or just the team leader?
When registering, you should only appoint a team leader with contact details who will receive all the material on April 22. When the team sends in the proposal on April 25, all members' names need to be provided.
If I have questions during the call, what help is there?
During the 72h competition, there will be an open chat for questions at 13–15 (1 p.m to 3 p.m) on April 22. All questions and answers will be public. You will receive a link to the chat upon registration.

Kan konstruktionen fästas i någon av de kringliggande fasaderna eller försänkas genom montering i marken?
Nej, platsen är kulturminnesmärkt och både marken och fasaderna är därmed skyddade.
Finns det specifika historiska aspekter eller element vid Hedmanska gården som bör framhävas eller bevaras genom installationen? Är det nödvändigt att göra en fysisk koppling till platsen, eller är en metaforisk tolkning tillräcklig?
Nej, det finns inga krav på att framhäva några specifika detaljer och kopplingen är fri för tolkning.
Är vi fria att själva bestämma vad installationen ska användas till eller har ni önskemål om sittplatser, lek eller annat?
Ni är fria att föreslå en egen funktion och användning för “Mellan-rummet”.
Förtydliga vad ni menar med täckt vägg och tak. Skulle en fristående MDF skiva definieras som vägg eller tak?
Installationen får inte gestaltas som en byggnad med täckt tak och vägg då den därmed betraktas som en byggnad och blir bygglovspliktig. Därmed får inga väggar eller tak vara solida. En MFD skiva definieras som en vägg och/eller tak.
Gäller maxhöjden 4 meter även för belysning, vegetation och vajrar mm?
Ja.
Om man vill använda sig av återbrukat material av något slag, bör man inventera var materialet finns innan eller finns det möjlighet att få hjälp att införskaffa det?
Fördelaktigt är om ni vet på förhand vart och hur det återbrukade materialet finns och ska återanvändas. Då tiden för genomförande arbetet för uppbyggnad är begränsad i maj innebär det att stödet för att hitta återbrukat material även är det.
Kan vi flytta på den möbleringen som redan står på gården?
Ja, bänkar och krukor inom det utmarkerade området får flyttas och bortforslas. Om ni önskar får de såklart ingå i ert förlag men de får inte modifieras.
Finns det någon maxvikt?
Nej, men viktigt att tänka på är frakt och bortförsel. Då tillgängligheten är begränsad av portikens mått (2200x2300) kan enbart manuella lyftdon användas.
Är maxhöjden 4 m även för vegetation?
Ja.
Behöver vi inkludera en beskrivning av hur installationen ska monteras och sedan kunna demonteras i vårt tävlingsförslag?
Det är av godo om ni har med demontering i era tankar och presentation.
Hur och var ska installationen förvaras? Måste allt gå att bära bort utan hjälpmedel, eller kan man anta att t.ex. truck eller annat bärhjälpmedel kan användas?
Den kommer monteras ner och vinterförvars på ett lager och kommer lite beroende på utformning mest sannolikt att monteras på pallar för att transporteras bort men en manuell truck.
Hur stora kan delarna för demontering och förvaring vara? Finns det en max höjd och bredd? Finns det en begräsning för bredd och höjd för införsel och transport till gården?
Maxgränsen baseras på portens innermått som är 2200x2300. Dessa mått begränsar storleken på in- och utförsel av installationen vid upp- och nedförande.
Kommer det finnas tillgång till ström och vatten på gården?
Ja det finns tillgång till ström för ev. installationer och belysning. Vatten finns att tillgå på gården via en befintlig kran och trädgårdsslang invid en av fasaderna.
Får man svetsa på gården?
För att svetsa krävs 10 meter till fasad vilket vi inte har på Hedmanska gården. Däremot går det att svetsa delarna på verkstad och transportera dit.
Hur ser den befintliga belysningen ut på gården? Går något att styra eller justera?
Den befintliga belysningen finns på fasader, vid entréer samt fasadbelysning och den går ej att styra.
Kommer juryn att utnämna en andra och tredje plats med?
Ja, med dessa erhåller ingen prissumma enbart ära och publicitet.
Räknas praktik som yrkeserfarenhet?
Nej.
Är det tillåtet att lämna in två olika förslag från samma person eller är det begränsat till ett förslag per deltagare?
Ja, men då det är en kort tävling rekommenderar vi att fokusera på ett förslag.
Min eventuella lagkamrat har arbetat i fyra år och tre månader. Kan hen delta då?
Ja, under fyra år och fem månader rundar vi ner till fyra år.
Under rubriken ”ansökningsformat” anges vad som ska skickas på respektive A3-sida. På sida 1–2 ska man beskriva sin idé. Kan man göra det i text? Eller ska all text få plats på sida 3 i koncepttexten på 150 ord?
Ni får använda text på alla sidor, viktigt är dock att ni tydligt förmedlar er bärande idé.
Enligt tävlingsdokumentet ska vi inkludera perspektivritningar i vårt förslag. Skulle ni kunna förtydliga om ni har en preferens för renderade bilder jämfört med axonometriska ritningar, eller är båda formaten acceptabla?
För illustrationer, skisser och bilder är det helt öppet att välja den teknik och metod som illustrerar er idé bäst.
Är vi förväntade att använda de bilder som ni har tillhandahållit för att skapa en perspektiv vy som visar vårt förslag?
Bilagorna är underlag och finns som stöd till er men behöver ej användas vid inlämningen.
Vad för möjligheter finns det för skötsel av vegetation? (Bevattning, ogräsrensning, etc.)
Form/Design Center och Stadsfastigheter sköter gården tillsammans. En viss grad av underhåll och bevattning ingår i våra rutiner exempelvis bevattning. Däremot har vi inte möjlighet till en mer omfattande skötsel utöver en underhållsplan för installationen.
Hur kommer underhåll och skötsel av installationen fungera och bekostas?
I budgeten för genomförande finns en summa avsatt för underhållskostnader (se nedan). Det är dock en begränsad summa som ej täcker regelbunden skötsel för mer omfattande och tidskrävande skötsel.
Vad ingår budgeten för genomförande och hur stor del av budgeten på 200 000 går till hantverkarna och har ni på förhand gjort en kalkyl av detta eller ska varje team själva göra den beräkningen?
