Cross Innovation Lab: Materials & Industries
During 2024-2025, What Matter_s 3.0 will be carried out, a development project where creators are brought together with industry stakeholders in manufacturing to collaborate interdisciplinary within the theme "Materials and manufacturing industry". What Matter_s 3.0 is implemented within the framework of the project Cross Innovation Southern Sweden, which is financed by the European Regional Development Fund, Region Skåne's cultural administration and Region Blekinge.
Purpose
The world is facing major challenges and we must quickly and effectively adapt as the world changes at an ever faster pace. All parts of society must work together to find solutions. The cultural and creative sector plays a crucial role in this work. Cross Innovation Laboratories, often called Innovation Labs, are specialized spaces or initiatives, designed to promote collaboration and innovation across sector boundaries. In these laboratories, professionals, experts and stakeholders from different industries and disciplines come together to work together to solve complex problems, generate new ideas and develop innovative solutions.
Background What Matter_s
What Matter_s is a platform initiated by Form/Design Center that brings together designers and actors from other industries to create new materials, innovative concepts and business opportunities based on sustainable development. The projects within What Matter_s have attracted a lot of attention both nationally and internationally and show the potential of interdisciplinary collaborations. Through What Matter_s, unique collaborations have been created where researchers have contributed knowledge about the chemistry, behavior and properties of different materials, while designers have added creative exploration with an eye for product possibilities. Production processes have developed thanks to designers' innovative thinking around circularity, upcycling and waste management.
Cross Innovation Southern Sweden
Cross Innovation Southern Sweden is a project that Region Skåne's Cultural Administration and Region Blekinge run with funding from the European Regional Development Fund. The overall aim of the project is to increase the pace towards a green transition and increase the innovation capacity of small and medium-sized companies. The cultural and creative industries' special expertise in everything from materials and construction to storytelling techniques and communication aesthetics is an all-too-often overlooked resource that the project wants to make use of. We believe that sustainable innovation can only arise in co-creation and a systemic approach.
Form/Design Center
Form/Design Center is the premier meeting place for architecture, design, and crafts in southern Sweden and a national hub for the designed living environment. In a unique, culturally historic setting in central Malmö, visitors can experience exhibitions, workshops, and lectures, as well as visit the shop and magazine café. The Form/Design Center serves as a platform for the industry and leads various sustainability projects.
Form/Design Center has been appointed by the government as the national hub for the designed living environment and is an official partner of the New European Bauhaus. The center was established in 1964 as part of the nonprofit organization Svensk Form and is currently supported by the Ministry of Culture, the City of Malmö, Region Skåne, and the Swedish Arts Council.
IUC Syd
The industrial cluster IUC Syd is a member organization and a meeting place for industrial development, growth, and collaboration. IUC Syd connects industry, research, and academia, offering projects, knowledge-intensive seminars, and networks with a strong focus on shared learning and experience exchange. While IUC Syd’s office is located in Malmö, it collaborates with experts and consultants primarily in Skåne but also across Sweden. IUC Syd is part of a network of 16 Industrial Development Centers across Sweden.
Cross Innovation Southern Sweden
Region Skåne and Region Blekinge have received SEK 15 million from the European Regional Development Fund for a three-year project aimed at strengthening local, municipal, and regional innovation capacity.
The goal of Cross Innovation is to open up new opportunities and create synergies by breaking down traditional boundaries and fostering creativity and innovation across different sectors and industries. By promoting cross-sector collaboration, we can help address complex societal challenges and support sustainable development.
