Commoning Kits – urban community, meeting places & sharing

What creates identity, local involvement and a sense of belonging in a city district? As new homes are planned and built in Sweden’s towns and cities, there is a growing insight that many components and viewpoints are lacking in the attempts to offer a complete thriving urban space with an interesting mixture, democratic urban spaces and social opportunities – with spaces for encounters, culture, recreation, spontaneity and business.

This Think Tank explores how new forms of co-usage, urban communities and a sharing economy can be created in existing urban districts and in development areas. Which meeting places do we need and which are missing? What makes urban spaces or environments democratic and inviting? Should they be planned from the top down or initiated at the grassroots level – and if so, who is responsible for their funding and implementation?

Our exploration begins with Sege Park, which will become a new hub in Malmö with the ambition of being a display window for socially and environmentally sustainable urban development. The discussion is organised jointly by Malmö Form/Design Center, Kjellander Sjöberg and the City of Malmö.

Think Tank 017 is a first step in the exploration of the city and will result in an exhibition entitled Commoning Kits at Malmö Form/Design Center in September 2017. The exhibition will offer further discussions and bring together innovative prototypes – toolboxes – for urban community, presented by 15 selected Nordic architectural firms.

The seminar will be held in English.

Kjellander Sjöberg Think Tank
Think Tank is a series of informal not-for-profit discussions arranged by Kjellander Sjöberg with the aim of creating involvement in and debate about urban construction and architecture at a deeper level. We focus on processes that shape and drive architecture forward and on issues that develop our physical environment and public space. Topical themes being addressed are new temporary urban planning strategies, quality of life, resources & sustainability, nature in the urban landscape and Swedish architectural culture.

Think Tank events are free of charge and open to the public. Participants and the audience consist of involved individuals and a broad-ranging gathering of colleagues, planners, customers and other stakeholders.
