In autumn 2017 product design students at Malmö University worked with Material Driven Design (MDD), which means that they turned the design process around and let the material be the starting point.

Ten groups present their results from working with Material Driven Design. What new materials have been created and what concept- or design solutions will we see?

The work has been divided into three main areas:

DIY, Do It Yourself – work with textile residues (a material which today is a major waste problem).
CIY, Cook It Yourself – the development of new bioplastics.
GIY, Grow It Yourself – making and developing kombucha (fermented tea) for new applications and possibilities.

In MDD the process is divided into several stages. Create, understand, analyse, do user studies, evaluate, and create material visions that lead to a result. The big challenge is to find new design possibilities for these new materials.
