As part of ‘Meetings and Walks’, you get to take a closer look at some of the region’s most acclaimed architecture projects. On this occasion, we visit ETC Hyllie, which was a finalist for the Malmö Urban Design Award 2026.

Can apartment buildings be built from straw and timber in the middle of the city? In Hyllie, ETC Hyllie proves that it is not only possible – but also a way forward towards a radically lower carbon footprint. As one of three finalists for this year’s Malmö Urban Design Award, ETC Hyllie challenges conventional construction practices through pioneering building techniques, ingenuity and a circular philosophy that permeates everything from material choices to the financing model.

During the tour, we explore the building’s unique straw and timber construction and take a closer look at how every detail has been designed to minimise its climate impact. We discuss how thoughtful architecture, generous knowledge sharing and courage can push the boundaries of what is possible in sustainable and climate-smart housing in Skåne.
